union bay // Seattle, WA
The landscape for the Union Bay residence is very tailored and open to reflect the character of the home’s architecture. The architecture’s strong forms require a garden with simple themes to give the home an appropriate setting. A long and narrow reflecting pool greets the visitor and runs nearly the length of the entry walk, providing a serene experience as one arrives at the front door. The parking court is screened from the street by a Laurel hedge and doubles as a sports court for the younger members of the family. The lakeside garden includes a swimming pool, fire feature, and large terraces for entertaining. Again, the strong lines, simple forms, and serene details of the garden reinforce the elegance of the home and property. The paving is a cream colored poured-in-place and precast concrete.
At the lakefront, a bulkhead was removed to allow easy access to the water for swimming, paddle boards, and kayaks. The new beach creates habitat for migrating salmon and restores the native ecology of the shoreline. It is a result of the owner’s commitment to improving aquatic habitat; and it also enhances opportunities for recreation.
The landscape design knits together the architecture and the lakeside site into a whole that celebrates a minimalist approach to design and waterfront restoration.
