The $12.6 million first redevelopment phase of Leach Botanical Garden gives visitors new reasons to visit its 17.3-acre public grounds owned by Portland Parks and Recreation in Oregon. The revitalized public garden serves as cultural touchstone and an environmental asset in an underserved neighborhood in southeast Portland.

Residential Design
Perched on the west slope of a Seattle hillside, the landscape for the three-level home melds with the architecture to create distinct garden rooms for the owner’s personal use. The design creates four outdoor rooms that connect to the residence’s architecture in a unique manner. The peaceful quality of the private entry courtyard provides views inward to the home and its modern architecture. From inside, views to the calming entry garden and burbling fountain can be appreciated from all three levels.

Leach Botanical Garden has become a signature public cultural attraction in southeast Portland, an historically underserved area. The garden attracted over 40,000 visitors during its first year. The project provides new ways for visitors to connect to nature and understand the history of the land; serves as a regional and local community asset; and offers a restorative experience. Visitation has doubled since the opening of the project; the site serves a wide, culturally diverse audience.

This re-envisioned garden features a contemporary aesthetic with its use of industrial materials. The gently sloping back garden was reorganized as a series of terraces tucked into lush plantings. The result is an intimate garden that feels spacious, lives large, and supports the owner’s lifestyle. There are spaces for sunning, growing food, entertaining, and testing plants. The terraces are delineated with simple materials and feature gabion retaining walls, a steel arbor, hedges, and artful lighting.

2021 Merit Award
With the home’s primary living areas located on the second and third levels, the bird’s eye view of the garden became a significant design consideration. Functional requirements included integrating a yard for pets and reconfiguring a biorention feature to manage storm water.
The resulting landscape is visually engaging from all levels of the home and can be enjoyed from inside and outside all times of the year.

Drawing inspiration from English garden rooms, the grounds of this Wakefield, Rhode Island, residence were divided into an entry court, a terrace with fire feature, a woodland garden, a dining terrace, a formal garden, two fencing pavilions and a sweeping lawn.

Nationwide interest in planting design has been rekindled. The authors comprehensively capture and contextualize the impact of this development, utilizing expository essays and engaging photography to celebrate modern American landscape architecture.

Mountsier Garden is a stroll garden through a series of curving berms and landforms that create a soothing but dynamic space. The garden provides a variety of settings and opportunities to display the client’s extensive art collection.
Mountsier Garden’s 1.5 acres acres are about the folding of the land. The concrete walls create a gateway; intersecting with berms that are covered with a sensuous layer of plants that soften and strengthen the landforms.

The Redding garden is a formal garden featuring a local vernacular of construction materials and details. Eight acres of rolling terrain have been divided into a dozen and half garden rooms.
The garden was designed to reflect a simple design motif that fits well into its surroundings. Its contemplative and beautiful character provides formal entertaining space and respite from life in New York City.
