THE PERCH // Seattle, WA

A Japanese style interior courtyard at The Perch residence in Seattle provides a sense of calm and serenity on many different levels.  Serving as the heart of the home, and visible from every floor of the home, the garden’s water feature flows from a burbling boulder to a serene reflective water basin.  The courtyard garden is planted with ferns, Spotty Dotty mayapple (Podophyllum) and a carpet of baby tears (Soleirolia soleirolii), creating a soothing green experience.  A large Japanese maple serves as the signature tree.  Boulders and the owner’s artifacts balance the scene.  Adjacent to the water feature, the biofiltration planter builds on the restful theme with additional ferns and a Gunnera plant.

Streetside, a mix of predominantly grasses and shrubs planted in horizontal bands screens traffic and contrasts with the strong vertical lines of the home.

Opposite the water garden, an outdoor terrace offers a seating area with fire feature and views of Elliot Bay, Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains.

A sunny upper deck for used dining and lounging is edged with custom steel planters to create a garden ambiance.  It’s the perfect place for herbs and vegetables.
