Another Perfect Plant:
Eucryphia x nymansensis ‘Nymansay’ is a choice hybrid whose parentage hails from the Valdivian temperate rainforest in Chile. This beautiful broadleaf evergreen has proven to be quite hardy in the Puget Sound region, provided that it is sheltered from icy winds while it is young. Its columnar form makes it a useful specimen tree in small urban gardens and a wonderful accent in more spacious settings. Though not yet widely available, it is possible to find it and it is well worth the search. Nymansay blooms in late summer when many other flowers have faded. Its fragrant white blossoms, vaguely reminiscent of camellias, are striking against a backdrop of glossy dark green foliage. If you listen closely, you will hear the hum of bees helping themselves to the abundant late season pollen and nectar.
